If you’ve started thinking about investing in eyelash extensions, you’re probably wondering what they’re made from.
Here is a quick explanation of the different types of lashes that is offer to you.
Mink Lashes
True mink lashes come from the actual mink animal. It is real animal hair, chemically straightened to place on your eyelashes (AKA not vegan or animal friendly). This term is probably the most asked about. I see some people refer to any eyelash extensions, regardless of whether it’s real mink or not, as ‘minks.’ They’re using it interchangeably with individual lash extensions.
Faux Mink Lashes
Faux mink lashes are the industry standard, pretty much all brands use this PBT fiber, a high-quality synthetic mink-like lash. These hold their curl and are tapered on the ends to create beautiful eyelash extension sets.
Cashmere or Silk
Silk lashes are definitely more on the synthetic side, and look less natural than faux mink. Cashmere lashes tend to be lightweight.
Classic vs. Volume
Classic lashes are the most common eyelash extensions, using one faux mink lash to one natural lash. When applied correctly, they are not damaging and can be worn for extended amounts of time.
Volume lashes are 3 or more ultra lightweight lashes made into what’s called a ‘fan’ and placed on one natural lash. These 3 or more lashes weight LESS than an individual classic lash.

Although some moisture aids in the curing of the glue, excessive amounts of water may supersaturate the glue and make it tacky and difficult to dry. During the first 48 hours, the adhesive bond is vulnerable to moisture, steam, excessive heat, cosmetic ingredients, and friction from rubbing and cleansing.
The following activities will result in a weaker bond, premature eyelash extensions loss and/or irritation, and therefore should be avoided during the first 48 hours:
After the first 24 to 48 hours, although the adhesive has fully cured, persistent exposure to moisture, steam, heat, incompatible cosmetics, and friction from rubbing, sleeping on the face, and cleansing may impact the durability of the adhesive bond. The most important thing to do is to make sure you are brushing through your lashes with a clean mascara wand, properly clean your lashes with the right products and always discuss the quality of your lash health with your artist.
Perhaps the largest misconception when it comes to lash extensions is the idea that they will harm your natural lashes. Let's clear that up — they will not. As with many of the notes above, if applied properly eyelash extensions will not ruin the health of our natural lashes. The most important item to consider is your eyelash artist. Make sure that they are documenting the health of your lashes and updating you during each service. If the proper lengths and thicknesses are selected, no harm should come to your natural lashes.
